The Powder Room: I love these projects. I say go crazy. I am not kidding. These rooms can handle the drama. After all, you're only in there for a limited amount of time. Or at least let's hope so. Intoxicate. But remember, by "crazy", I don't mean a mad hatter, mismatched decorative soup. But many Powder Rooms can be classified under the following: Forgettable. I guess it takes more than a candle and cool soap. Needless to say people have time to investigate a Powder Room. So, intricate and small wallpaper patterns work great. Just make sure the color scheme is tight. As do smaller scale stone textures, wall molding and hand painted decorative tiles. You have a captive audience so use it. Spoken like the middle child I am. All I ask is that you spare your guests the goofy signs, sayings or books, in favor of prints, patterns or even sheet music. Create a theme and use the limited wallspace efficiently and with a sense of purpose. Unlike third floor hallways, wall space in a Powder Room really matters. If an immediate theme escapes you, try using these simple design tips for greater impact in your Powder Room. #1.) Don't find a mirror, make a statement: Finding the right size mirror can be a challenge, so stop searching. Go to your local framer select a custom frame that speaks to you. Then have it crafted to your exact specifications. In many cases, the mirror will cost only slightly more than the one's available through most retailers, catalogs or websites. The look is custom, tailored and when not hindered by stock sizes, chances are you're more likely to make a more interesting selection. #2.) Don't fear color: It's a myth that dark colors make a space feel smaller. Rooms are either interesting or they're not...regardless of their color scheme. As a general rule, the stronger the color the higher you set the bar. So, let coordination be your guide. If using a bolder focal color, make sure you've balanced the scheme with hints of subtle and complimentary tones. Thus avoiding a circus like, NASCAR appearence. Strong color is great, but wield that brush carefully. And #3.) Three words, sink, faucet, vanity: These elements can make or break the Powder Room. The key is to select original offerings that reflect thoughtful coordination. Look for new finishes and surface materials. Throw some time, energy and resources at a hand crafted or found object vanity. It will be worth the added expense. Sometimes sinks and faucets will only get you so far. Artistic and original cabinetry can make a huge impact. The moral of the story; It's not necessarily how much you spend, but rather where you spend it.
